Thursday round-up
On Monday night the Shakespeare Theater hosted its annual mock trial, based on the musical Man of La Mancha. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg served as the Chief Justice for the event, joined by Justice Stephen Breyer, Chief Judge Merrick Garland and Judge Patricia Millett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. - Howard Fischer of Capitol Media Services (via YourWestValley.com) reports on Tuesday’s appearance in Phoenix by Justice Antonin Scalia, who gave “a spirited and sometimes humorous talk” in which he “defended being an ‘originalist’ on the bench, surrounded by so many others who he says just get it wrong.”
- In her column for The New York Times, Linda Greenhouse suggests that, if the Court rules that there is a right to same-sex marriage, the aftermath “may be a morning-after landscape of more confusion than clarity, with some rain falling on the victory parades.”
- In the National Review Online, Roger Clegg and Joshua Thompson urge the Court to grant Abigail Fisher’s petition for review of the Fifth Circuit’s latest decision upholding (on remand from the Supreme Court) the University of Texas at Austin’s use of affirmative action in its undergraduate admissions process.
