Thursday round-up
The big news out of the Court yesterday came in the challenges to several states’ bans on same-sex marriage: the seven petitions that have been filed so far will all be considered by the Justices at their private Conference on September 29. - In The Washington Post, Robert Barnes profiles Deputy Solicitor General Edwin Kneedler, who has argued more cases at the Court than any other practicing lawyer and is among the finalists “for the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal, recognizing federal employees for their career service.”
- In the New Republic, Justin Driver reviews Scalia: A Court of One, a new biography of Justice Antonin Scalia.
- In The National Law Journal (registration or subscription required), Tony Mauro reports on the results of a new poll indicating that “[n]early three-quarters of the public wants the U.S. Supreme Court to allow video broadcast of its proceedings.”
- Also in The National Law Journal’s Supreme Court Brief (registration or subscription required), Mauro reports that the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund has hired J.P. Schnapper-Casteras to fill the newly created position of special counsel for appellate and Supreme Court advocacy.
- At the blog of the National Conference of State Legislatures, Lisa Soronen reviews four upcoming petitions that “stand out as having a particularly significant impact on the states, if the court accepts them.”
