Supreme Court rules for NRA in First Amendment dispute

The court on Thursday unanimously reinstated a lawsuit by the National Rifle Association, alleging that the former superintendent of the New York Department of Financial Services had violated the group’s First Amendment rights when she urged banks and insurance companies not to do business with the NRA after the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

Little guidance from court on New York interest requirement on national bank escrow accounts

Thursday’s decision in Cantero v. Bank of America did little to resolve the question at hand. The court held that the lower court was too quick to accept Bank of America’s argument that federal law preempts a New York statute requiring banks to pay interest on escrow accounts they hold to pay taxes and insurance premiums for their mortgage borrowers.

Justices reinstate death sentence for Arizona man

In an opinion by Justice Samuel Alito, the Supreme Court on Thursday reversed a lower court ruling and reinstated Arizona man Danny Lee Jones’ death sentence. Jones had argued that his Sixth Amendment right to have adequate representation was violated during the sentencing phase of his trial.
