Federal law proscribes bribes to state and local officials but does not make it a crime for those officials to accept gratuities for their past acts.

Reversed and remanded, 6-3, in an opinion by Brett Kavanaugh on Jun 26, 2024. Justice Gorsuch filed a concurring opinion. Justice Jackson filed a dissenting opinion, in which Justices Sotomayor and Kagan joined.
