The Second Amendment right of individuals to keep and bear arms in self defense applies against state and local governments as well as the federal government.

Reversed and remanded, 5-4, in an opinion by Samuel Alito on Jun 28, 2010. Justice Scalia filed a concurring opinion. Justice Thomas filed an opinion concurring in part and concurring in the judgment. Justice Stevens filed a dissenting opinion. Justice Breyer also filed a dissent, joined by Justices Ginsburg and Sotomayor.
