Lacaze v. Louisiana
Petition granted, judgment vacated, and case remanded for further consideration in light of Rippo v. Baker on October 2, 2017.
Issue
(1) Whether, under McDonough Power Equipment, Inc. v. Greenwood, "a valid basis for a challenge for cause" requires a showing that a correct response would have subjected the juror to mandatory or per se disqualification, or whether it requires a showing that a hypothetical reasonable judge would have granted a motion to dismiss the juror for cause; (2) whether the McDonough test applies only in cases of deliberate dishonesty by the juror or whether it applies also in cases of misleading omissions; and (3) whether a trial judge's involvement as a witness in a police investigation before and during trial, and his failure to even disclose it, creates an "unconstitutional potential for bias" under Williams v. Pennsylvania.
