Whether the "but for" causal requirement announced in Gross v. FBL Financial Services, which held that a plaintiff bringing a disparate-treatment claim under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act must prove by a preponderance of the evidence that age was the but-for cause of the challenged adverse employment action, applies to federal employees under the federal-employer provision of the ADEA.
