U.S. to appeal campaign case

The Justice Department on Thursday notified a federal judge in Alexandria, Va., that it will appeal his ruling striking down, in a criminal case, the federal law that bans corporations from direct contributions to candidates for the presidency and Congress.  U.S. District Judge James C. Cacheris limited his ruling to the specific case, but that would keep the government from going forward with that charge in the trial of two corporate executives.  The Department’s notice of appeal is here.

The appeal will go to the Fourth Circuit Court, based in Richmond, Va.
