Individual arrested outside Court

UPDATE: The Supreme Court identified the individual a Travis Banks, 48, of Philadelphia. He was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, and was turned over to Washington, D.C., police for jailing. His arrest came without incident, the Court said. After the package he had left was inspected, the streets around the Courthouse were reopened to normal traffic.

An individual was arrested by Supreme Court police Thursday afternoon, after firing off a flare gun on the Court’s front plaza, Court spokeswoman Kathleen L. Arberg announced. The individual, whom she did not immediately identify, also had left a “suspicious package” outside the Courthouse. The package was examined and was found to be harmless, the Court said later.

If any charges are to be filed, that would come only after the individual had been transferred to the local police department.

Further details are expected.
