Wednesday News Round-Up

NPR has featured a series of pieces over the last two days that focused on the Supreme Court. Nina Totenberg has an extended analysis of the October Term 2005 here, while Ari Shapiro’s report on the status of detainee cases in civil court can be found here.

The New York Times has a piece regarding the status of the controversial San Diego cross here.

Ruth Marcus of the Washington Post has a piece (here) with further comments on how Justice Kennedy is poised to become the central figure on the Court, and her colleague Harold Meyerson comments on the various paths the Republicans can take in response to the Hamdan ruling here. The Post’s editorial page also has some further thoughts on the outcome of the Texas redistricting case here.

The Wall Street Journal’s Ben Winograd has an analysis of how criminal defendants fared in cases that came before the Court here.

Finally, the National Law Journal has an opinion piece by lawyer Steve Sanders analyzing the implications for federalism raised by New Mexico v. Forbes, which is a still-pending cert. petition before the Court (No. 05-644). The article is entitled “Getting it Backward,” and it can be found here.
