October arguments, day by day

The Supreme Court on Monday released the schedule of cases to be argued in the opening weeks of the new Term – the session that begins Oct. 6. On four of the five days in this session, the Court will be hearing three cases a day, instead of the more recent custom of two a day. The morning sessions begin at 10 a.m., the afternoon sessions at 1 p.m.  A PDF of the calendar is here.

Monday, Oct. 6: Altria Group v. Good (07-562) – right to sue tobacco companies over marketing of “light” cigarettes.
Locke v. Karass (07-610) – non-union member exemption from fee for union lawsuits
1 p.m.: Vaden v. Discover Bank (07-773) – scope of federal court power to order arbitration
Tuesday, Oct. 7: Herring v. U.S. (07-513) – exclusion of evidence obtained in flawed search
Arizona v. Gant (07-542) – police authority to search vehicle after making arrest
1 p.m.: Kennedy v. Plan Administrator, DuPont Savings (07-636) – surrender of divorced spouse’s claim to pension benefits
Wednesday, Oct. 8: Negusie v. Mukasey (07-499) – availability of asylum for foreign prison guard
Crawford v. Nashville (06-1595) – protection against retaliation for witness in internal investigation
1 p.m.: Summers v. Earth Island Institute (07-463) – scope of court review of federal agency regulations
Monday, Oct. 13:Â Legal holiday, no arguments scheduled
Tuesday, Oct. 14: Bartlett v. Strickland (07-689) – right of minority voters to new election district
Pearson v. Callahan (07-751) – right to search house after undercover agent had entered
Wednesday, Oct. 15: Waddington v. Sarausad (07-772) – federal habeas review of jury instructions in state criminal case
Chrones v. Pulido (07-544) – scope of structural error in general jury verdict
1 p.m.: Oregon v. Ice (07-901) – judge-imposed consecutive sentences as violation of jury trial right
