Court working next week

With the shutdown of much of the federal government continuing, because of the budget impasse on Capitol Hill, the Supreme Court on Thursday said it would be open and carrying on its usual functions at least through next Friday.  Six cases are scheduled for oral argument during the week, and those will go forward, the Court said.

Here is the announcement of the Court’s plans: “The Court will continue to conduct its normal operations through October 11. The Court building will be open to the public during its usual hours, and the Court will hear the scheduled oral arguments.  A further update will be provided in the event the lapse of appropriations continues beyond October 11.”

On Thursday afternoon, the Court was closed for a brief period, because of a shooting incident on nearby streets.  The Court building later reopened, and tourists were allowed to enter up to the usual closing time.   The Court itself did not appear to be threatened by the incident, although one of its police cars was damaged; there were no injuries.
