The Week Ahead

The Court is in recess for the summer. The opening conference for next term will take place September 29. Oral arguments will resume October 6.

On Monday, jurors are expected to hear closing arguments and begin deliberating in the war crimes trial of Salim Ahmed Hamdan, Osama bin Laden’s former driver, at Guantanamo Bay.

On Tuesday, the state of Texas is scheduled to execute Jose Ernesto Medellin, the petitioner in Medellin v. Texas (06-984). Justice Scalia currently has before him an application for a stay of execution (discussed here).

The petitioner’s merits brief is due Thursday in Winter, et al. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., et al. (07-1239).  Respondents’ merits briefs are due Wednesday in Pearson v. Callahan (07-751) and Waddington v. Sarausad (07-772), Thursday in Wyeth v. Levine (06-1249), and Friday in Ysursa v. Pocatello Education Association (07-869).
