Williams v. Charleston County Sheriff’s Office
Petition for a writ of certiorari granted on March 23, 2026. The judgment is vacated, and the case is remanded for to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit for further consideration in light of Galette v. New Jersey Transit Corp.
Issue: 1) Whether, when a state is not liable for a judgment against an entity, weight should be given to this fact in the arm-of-the-state immunity analysis of that entity; and (2) whether the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is an arm of the state of South Carolina for sovereign immunity purposes.
