Supreme Court to hear challenge to ban on transgender health care for minors

On Wednesday, the justices will hear oral arguments in what could be one of the most significant cases of the term, a challenge to Tennessee’s ban on puberty blockers and hormone therapy for transgender teens. Since 2021, 23 states have enacted similar laws. The Biden administration and families of three trans teens argue that the Tennessee law and those like it are unconstitutional.

Justices weigh Holocaust survivors’ right to sue Hungary for compensation

At oral arguments on Tuesday the justices examined the latest stage of a dispute over efforts by survivors of the Hungarian Holocaust and their heirs to receive compensation for property seized by the government and national railway during the late stages of World War II. Hungary told the Supreme Court that it is protected under federal law from such a suit in U.S. courts by sovereign immunity.

ARGUMENT ANALYSIS

Justices hear FDA case on flavored vapes

The court heard oral arguments on Monday in a case brought by the Food and Drug Administration seeking to uphold its rejection of applications to sell flavored vape liquids. The agency says the fruit- and candy-flavored e-liquids appeal to young people and make them more likely to start vaping. Two vape companies say the agency acted unlawfully when it changed its position in rejecting their applications.

Former Roberts clerk appointed to argue deportation case

at 4:31 p.m.

The court on Tuesday appointed Stephen Hammer, a former clerk to Chief Justice John Roberts, to defend a lower court ruling in a dispute over the deadline to file a petition to block a deportation that would put an immigrant’s life or freedom at risk. The appointment comes after the Biden administration declined to defend the lower court’s ruling. The court granted Riley v. Garland last month and has not yet scheduled the case for argument.
