Monday round-up

Briefly:

  • For USA Today, Richard Wolf reports that “the woman fondly known as the “Notorious RBG” is traveling the nation giving speeches, staging conversations and accepting awards and honorary degrees[:] By demonstrating her vitality before adoring audiences, she hopes to tamp down concerns about her longevity.”
  • Lawrence Hurley reports at Reuters that, “[w]ith new abortion cases on a fast track to the U.S. Supreme Court, the nine justices will get an opportunity within weeks to take up legal fights over Republican-backed laws that could lead to rulings curbing a woman’s ability to obtain the procedure.”
  • At AP, Jessica Gresko reports that Mathena v. Malvo, in which convicted Washington, D.C.-area sniper Lee Boyd Malvo is asking the justices to overturn his sentence of life without parole, could be “an opportunity for the Supreme Court, which has recently become more conservative, to put the brakes on what has been a gradual move toward more leniency for juvenile offenders.”
  • For National Affairs, Joel Alicea and John Ohlendorf write that New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. City of New York, New York, a challenge to New York City’s limits on transporting personal firearms, “poses a challenge to what has become a familiar feature of American constitutional law: the tiers of scrutiny,” and they argue that the justices should “begin the process of eliminating the scrutiny tests from constitutional jurisprudence for good.”
  • The AARP Foundation previews upcoming Supreme Court cases with implications for older Americans.
  • Video of a panel discussion previewing the next Supreme Court term featuring Rick Hasen and others is available here.
  • Cases and Controversies (podcast) has a “deep dive term preview” that “break[s] down the biggest issues facing the court.”
