The D.C. Circuit Court this morning (Friday) holds a 30-minute hearing on two combined cases that make broad claims of torture, abuse and religious discrimination against detainees being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. A federal judge dismissed, in part on technical grounds, the torture and abuse claims, but ruled that the religious discrimination claims could go forward. Both sides are appealing in the cases of Rasul v. Myers (06-5209) and Rasul v. Rumsfeld (06-5222).
The briefs and other filings in case 06-5222 — the torture and abuse litigation — can be found at this link. This litigation marks the first attempt by Guantanamo prisoners to get court review of their claims of psychological and physical mistreatment by their captors.
