		<description>Emily Bazelon&#039;s piece exemplifies the hyperinflation of the word &quot;extreme&quot; by folks on the left.  Yes, Roberts is conservative, but he is no more &quot;extreme&quot; than the liberal justices.  Has he voted to bring back &lt;i&gt;Hammer&lt;/i&gt; v. &lt;i&gt;Dagenhart&lt;/i&gt;, 247 U.S. 251 (1918)?  &lt;i&gt;That&lt;/i&gt; would be &quot;extreme,&quot; but he hasn&#039;t done that or anything like that.

The changes in the law this term have been incremental, not revolutionary.  To the extent the Court&#039;s center of gravity has shifted, it has been primarily the result of O&#039;Connor-&gt;Alito, not Rehnquist-&gt;Roberts.  I expect the late Chief would have voted pretty much the same as the new one on the major cases of this term.
