The private ceremony was arranged quickly, so that he could immediately start acting on court business. There will be a formal public ceremony later on.

I believe the same thing was done for Roberts. He took the oath privately within a few hours of his confirmation, so that he could show up for work at his new job, and see everything a Chief Justice is legally entitled to see. The pomp and ceremony came later.

I'm wondering how the oaths of newly confirmed Justices are typically administered. I was not yet conscious of these things when Breyer was sworn in.

Chief Justice Roberts' swearing in seemed much more public compared to that of Justice Alito, which is described as a "private ceremony", and there don't seem to be any pictures of the event immediately available from the media.

Is the private nature of the ceremony common? Or was it simply an accommodation to get it done as soon as possible so that Alito could attend the State of the Union as a Justice?

Coincidence. The notion that he is somehow anti-civil-rights is hogwash, as any fair reading of his opinions reveals.

For the second time, Alito is associated with the death of a major civil rights icon. First, Rosa Parks, and now Coretta Scott King. Coincidence, or augur of the future? Only time will tell!
