Thursday round-up

Briefly:

  • On Tuesday evening, Justice Sonia Sotomayor spoke at the American University’s Washington College of Law, where – among other things – she told students that the federal and state judiciaries are “missing a huge amount of diversity.”  Tony Mauro covered the Justice’s speech for the Blog of Legal Times.
  • New Jersey governor Chris Christie and that state’s government are expected to ask the Court to review the constitutionality of a federal ban on sports gambling. Reid Wilson reports for The Washington Post.
  • Arizona attorney general Tom Horne has asked the Court to review a decision by the Ninth Circuit holding that a state law which denies Medicaid funding to doctors and clinics that perform abortions is unconstitutional.  Alia Beard Rau reports for The Arizona Republic.
  • Diane Marie Amann previews next month’s oral argument in BG Group PLC v. Republic of Argentina, in which the Court will consider the extent to which federal courts may review arbitrators’ finding of jurisdiction, for this blog.

[Disclosure: Goldstein & Russell, P.C., whose attorneys contribute to this blog in various capacities, serves as counsel to the petitioner in this case.]
