Gregory Coleman killed

Gregory S. Coleman, one of Texas’s leading appellate lawyers and a former clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas, has been killed in a plane crash in Florida, according to various news accounts.  Coleman argued in the Court on Oct. 13, in Skinner v. Switzer, on access to DNA evidence — a case not yet decided.  In 2009, he argued one of the Court’s most important civil rights cases in years — Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District v. Holder, on county governments’ right to bail out of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.  The accident that took his life is reported in this news story.

(Thanks to several readers for informing the blog of this tragic event.)
