The Week Ahead

On Tuesday, the Justices are scheduled to hold a private conference. (Click here for our list of petitions to watch.) Among the cases up for consideration are District of Columbia v. Heller (07-290) and a cross-petition, Parker v. District of Columbia (07-335), both stemming from the District’s handgun ban. Orders reflecting grants of certiorari (if any) are expected Tuesday afternoon; all other orders are expected the following Monday, November 26.

Petitioners’ briefs are due Wednesday in Ali v. Achim (06-1346), the consolidated cases of Morgan Stanley Capital Group v. Public Utility District No. 1 (06-1457) and Calpine Energy Services v. Public Utility District No. 1 (06-1462), and Warner-Lambert v. Kent (06-1498). No respondents’ briefs are due this week. (Links to case pages on SCOTUSwiki.)

The Court will be closed Thursday for Thanksgiving.

  1. Dear Supreme Court Justices,

For my part, I cannot wait until Your Honors consider the D.C. “handgun” cases. Being both in the gun business AND an advocate for sensible gun laws is cumbersome and fatiguing for me. But most importantly, the country needs a definitive interpretation of the 2nd Amendment regarding any rights/privileges it grants for the private posession of arms, individual or colective.

    Best wishes to you,
